Graduating from Centennial College’s aviation program, officially known as Aviation Technician – Aircraft Maintenance, takes determination and devotion, as students must complete 200 tasks in order to do so. In addition, students must obtain a minimum C grade in all courses for graduation. Because of the stringent requirements, only students who are truly interested in the aviation field and careers with airlines/operators, manufacturers, military, aviation training, repair and overhaul and aviation equipment/avionics, should apply. In addition, students who are interested in seeking a career in non-aircraft related areas of certain repair and manufacturing industries should also apply.
Aviation program or Aircraft Technician Training applicants are required to have completed at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (or equivalent or be 19 years of age or older); and English 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent and Math 11M or U or 12C or U or skills assessment or equivalent.
Once they are accepted, students become part of an aviation program that is Transport Canada approved. As such, students are accredited by the organization granted that they meet attendance requirements, project completion requirements and attain 70 percent in each course. Successful graduates who meet the accreditation requirements are eligible for an 18-month experience credit and technical examination credit towards the regulatory requirements for issue of a Canadian Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Licence. This aviation program also holds the Canadian Council for Aviation and Aerospace accreditation and recognition towards meeting the basic training requirements for CCAA occupational trade certification as an avionics maintenance technician.
Taking two years to complete, the aviation program or Aircraft Technician Courses teaches students highly sought after skills in aircraft maintenance, power plant structures, inspections, troubleshooting, mechanical, electrical and electronic applications. Students also acquire other sciences related to aircraft maintenance, to equip them for work in the aircraft maintenance industry. To master all of these skills, Aviation program students spend much of their time in labs working on aircraft engines, conducting aircraft and component inspections in a maintenance environment and performing flight-line activities. Specific Aviation program courses include: Safety and Human Factors, Piston Engines and Propellers, Sheet Metal & Aircraft Structures, Theory of Flight, Aircraft Publications, Turbine Engines, Airframe Systems and more.
All of the Aviation program’s courses are facilitated from Centennial College’s Ashtonbee Campus, which houses the provinces largest transportation training centre. This centre is equipped with a fully functional aircraft hangar, licensed by Transport Canada, complete with a fleet of 10 aircraft that is used as a training aid by the aircraft technician training students.
Additionally, qualified aviation program grads may be eligible to participate in an articulated program with selected universities. These partnerships may allow graduates to apply academic credit towards further study. The program’s partner is British Columbia Institute of Technology (Technology Management degree).
